Custom Timber-Frame Chalet
Trick or Treat!
"L'orchestre a la contrebasse", donated to the Kachemak Board of Realtors' Christmas Party and Fundraiser by Art Swisher, Owner/Broker of Coastal Realty Homer. The theme of the party was "An Evening in Paris" so this numbered and signed limited-edition lithograph by French artist Raya Sorkine was a perfect addition to the live auction.
This year all proceeds from the live auction and the silent auction are being donated to Hospice of Homer, The Food Pantry of Homer, and Kach-a-kid Foster Care Children Program. Thanks KBR for a fun evening and thanks to all the generous folks that bid on the amazing auction items, your generosity helps support these local organizations that do so much good for our community.
December 1st in our office means
one thing...Christmas music!
I was out in the office garden taking some pictures of all the beautiful flowers in full bloom a few days ago. Looking back at the photos I noticed this lone Fireweed photo-bombing the Delphiniums. The flowers on the Fireweed plant bloom from the bottom of the plant up, and the saying goes that once the flowers reach the top there are only 6 weeks left till winter. I certainly hope this isn't true because this is only the end of July, and if I do the math I don't like the answer! Maybe that little Fireweed is there to remind me to pay attention and take time to enjoy this beautiful, short-lived season while being mindful that changing seasons are inevitable and should be welcomed...even winter.
Named for former fishery biologist Nick Dudiak, whose two-fold vision was to create a fishery accessible to all ages and provide a financial boost to the area, the Fishing Hole, as it is commonly known, was initially stocked with salmon smolt in 1984. As returning salmon circle the lagoon in search of a nonexistent stream where they can spawn, fishermen line the banks. The more fish, the more fishermen.
A city campground is located on one side of the lagoon, the Spit Trail passes right by, and a large parking area separates the Fishing Hole from Spit Road. In 1990, the lagoon’s success earned it the title of “Best Sport Fish Enhancement Project in the Nation.” The most angler days in one year were 32,000 in 2004. The least was 9,000 in 2009.
Check out this short, amusing "movie trailer" showing what's happening right now at the Fishing Hole, created by Jim Lavrakas, Executive Director of the Homer Chamber of Commerce: http://youtu.be/6G3KQHDvJwE
We are more than 2 weeks past summer solstice and still enjoying almost 19 hours of sunlight each day! This makes our flowers grow like crazy and this is the time of year when everything is bustin' out blooming. The garden around our office is glowing with color and today I counted over 25 different varieties of flowers in bloom. The real show-stoppers of course are the huge white peonies, and the most unusual flower in the garden is the yellow climbing clematis that is threatening to take over the whole east side of our log building. Lots of hard work goes into the planting and maintenance of the garden and now we are enjoying the results! If you are in the Homer area, we invite you to stop by and smell the roses.
May peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through!
